Professor Bruno Deffains re-enters the legal profession at De Gaulle Fleurance & Associés

Father of legal economics, Bruno Deffains joins De Gaulle Fleurance & Associés as an Of Counsel. He will notably offer his expertise on issues relating to the evaluation and compensation of competitive, commercial, environmental and ecological damages. Having previously conducted research on alternative dispute resolution, he will advise companies on their litigation strategies. He is an expert in the digital economy and technologies based on APIs, Big Data, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things and blockchain. He will also be involved in a number of matters related to the digital transformation of industries affected by this movement.

Bruno Deffains is an Associate Professor and has a rare and valuable knowledge of the interplay between law and economics, ideally suited to an in-depth analysis of economic and financial activities, particularly in the areas of competition, distribution, corporate governance and market regulation.

“Our world is changing,” observes Bruno Deffains. “New issues are appearing, tied to digital transitions (with blockchain and cryptocurrencies but also the emergence of Metavers…), as well as to ecological and societal transitions (growing challenges in terms of CSR, governance and the raison d’être of companies…). It is therefore essential to guide corporations faced with these changes. Every business sector is affected by these new challenges, giving rise to both opportunities and risks, meaning that the legal and economic consequences must be carefully assessed to ensure a successful adaptation of companies to these changes”.

Bruno Deffains holds a doctorate in the economics of civil liability and is involved in distribution and competition law. He is the author of numerous publications in law and economics. He has also co-authored Repairing Competitive Damages, published in 2015 by Dalloz Editions, as well as L’Index de la sécurité juridique, published in 2018 by Dalloz Editions.

Based at the University of Paris-Panthéon-Assas, Bruno Deffains has directed the Center for Research in Economics and Law for the past ten years. He also directs the Master of Business Law and Economics and the University Diplomas “Digital transformation of law and legaltech” and “Economic and organizational mediation”. In addition, he has been a member of the Institut Universitaire de France and a visiting professor at numerous foreign universities, including Yale, where he set up a Summer School program involving ESSEC, Paris-Panthéon-Assas and Yale Law School on the theme of “Law and Economics of Contract Law and Arbitration”.

He currently sits on the Commission d’Examen des Pratiques Commerciales and the Commission Nationale Consultative des Droits de l’Homme. He is a member of the Club des Juristes as well as a member of Paris Place de Droit.

I am pleased to join De Gaulle Fleurance & Associés”, explains Bruno Deffains. “It’s a law firm that stands out from the rest because of its unique organizational structure (no departments, project-based teamwork, etc.), a structure that fosters innovation, initiative and a 360° view of clients’ issues. These qualities are essential today in order to develop the new services that companies need to adapt to these digital, societal and ecological transitions.”

We are delighted to welcome Bruno Deffains,” said Louis de Gaulle and Henri-Nicolas Fleurance, respectively Chairman and Managing Director of De Gaulle Fleurance & Associés. “Bruno is one of the main leaders of the legal economy in Europe. His arrival will greatly enhance the services we offer to our clients”.
